How Do Partnership Ad Codes Work on Instagram?

What is an Instagram Partnership Ad Code?

Instagram Partnership Ad codes are creator-generated codes authorizing brands to promote a creator’s content with Instagram ads.

These codes are in the Instagram app under the “Partnership label & ads” tab for individual posts and Stories. Instagram ad codes are formatted as “adcode-” followed by a string of numbers.

After a creator toggles a code on, they can share it with a brand partner to be promoted as an ad. Brands refer to this process as allowlisting (or whitelisting).

You can generate Partnership Ad codes for multiple Instagram post types including In-Feed Posts, Reels and Carousels. You can also create codes for Stories.

Note: Although Partnership ad codes are sometimes referred to as “boost codes,” don’t confuse them with the Instagram Boost Post feature!

How to Get an Instagram Partnership Ad Code (Visual Steps)

Here’s an animated walkthrough of where to find Instagram ad codes and how fast you can get them:

We’ve also broken down each step of the process below. For brands running Partnership Ads, feel free to share these instructions with your creators!

Step 1: In your Instagram Creator account, go to the post your brand partner wants to promote as a Partnership ad. Tap the vertical (…) icon in the upper right-hand corner of the post.

Step 2: Select the “Partnership label & ads” option in the menu that pops up.

Step 3: Under “Partnership ad permissions” you’ll see the “Get partnership ad code” toggle. This toggle is off by default.

Step 4: Tap the toggle to generate your code. Once your code is generated, you can tap the left button (📄adcode-#) to copy your code to your clipboard to share via email. Alternatively, you can tap the right “Share” button to open up your Instagram DMs to share the code.

And you’re done on the creator’s side!  That wasn’t so bad, was it?

Grabbing a Partnership code only takes a few seconds and is so much faster than the old way of doing Instagram whitelisting. From here, brands take the reins by using codes to generate new ads.

How Do Partnership Ad Codes Work?

Here’s a quick explanation of how Partnership Ads work according to Meta. You can find this information in the Instagram app by tapping “How it works” in the “Partnership label & ads” menu.

To wrap things up, let’s dig into what happens when brands get advertising access from creators and common questions on how to use Instagram Partnership ad codes.

Partnership Ad Codes Do Not Expire by Default

This is a key difference between Partnership Ads and TikTok Spark Ad codes. While Spark codes have an authorization period which is set by creators, Partnership ads don’t expire by default.

However, creators do have the ability to turn off their Partnership ad codes.

Note that even when a creator disables their code, Partnership Ads featuring a boosted post will continue to run until the ad campaign is complete. Creators can also generate new ad codes for a post that has previously been disabled.

Brands Can Edit Their Creators’ Partnership Ad Posts

Unlike TikTok Spark Ads which turn creators’ posts into ads as-is, Partnership Ads actually allow brands to make content edits.

Brands can edit details including captions and music “to meet their goals” according to Instagram. Not to mention the ability to add testimonials and review text to an ad with attribution to the creator.

While the creator’s original post will remain technically unchanged, their ability to make edits is limited while a Partnership ad is live.

Partnership Ads Aren’t Shown as Ads on the Creator’s Profile

Instagram specifies to creators that posts run Partnership ads “won’t be visible on your profile” until they’re no longer authorized.

With this ad format, promotional posts can appear from the brand or creator’s handle based on “if people are more likely to respond.” Some Partnership ads are presented from both the brand and creators’ handles.

How to Manage Your Brand’s Instagram Partnership Ad Codes

If you’re scaling UGC ads on Instagram, you’re on the right track.

Because creators across industries are helping brands improve their paid social performance. This is especially true for Instagram Reels.

While getting Instagram ad codes is easy enough, managing those codes for hundreds of creators is a headache. Instead of digging through DMs or sending follow-up emails, brands should do everything they can to put the process of running UGC ads on autopilot.
